On the 27th of February Rm 14 went on a 3 day, 2 night camp at Kaituna Valley.
First of all we stopped at Halswell Quarry. We learnt all about the history of the quarry and how it was made. We found out how tiring it was for all the workers at the quarry, carrying heavy rocks up the hill all day.We even had to carry our own rocks up the hill to see how heavy they were. Then we had lunch in the hot sun, while having lunch we played a game of chicken tag. Then the park rangers Murray Rob and Vicky took us up to the old managers house and showed us around. Then it was time to hit the road and head to camp.
At camp we were amazed by the big space and great setup. There were 2 or 3 kids in each tent but the women slept in a tent on the girls side and the men slept in a tent on the boys side. The worst thing about camp was the disgusting portaloo's and not having showers but that's what campings about. At camp there was a stream which we used to keep our milk cold. We had heaps of fun playing in it but it was freezing and people were scared of toe biters. One annoying thing about camp was all the sheep poo. When we got to camp we did a water watch activity with the smart scientists Earl and Kelvin. They taught us about the weather temperatures and we got to go fish in the stream for bugs.It was worthwhile and very interesting.
On the second day at camp we walked up Mount Herbert it was great fun apart from standing in 100,000 piles of cow and sheep poo. At mainly every stop Mr Rait gave us a biscuit and a few facts about a tree or the surroundings. Rm 14 will never regret Mr Rait for making us eat the spicy pepper leaf. When everyone made it to the top Mrs Follero gave out chocolates and we took photos of the amazing view. Going downhill was such a relief especially when we reached the shelter where we could go to the toilet and get more water. There was lots of stinging nettle (onga onga) all over the track but the foxglove was a great cure for the kids who got stung. Overall everyone had great fun.
On the last day at camp we played heaps of fun team games like the iceberg game. We also got to make chants with our table group. After that we cleaned our tents and had lunch. At about 1:30 we started heading home going back to school we visited the Kaituna church we looked at the graveyard and went and had a look inside the church. Then we hopped in the cars and headed to school. And that was the end of room 14s awesome camp.
