Gracie's and Grace's experience.
Last Wednesday 28/2/2013 Room 14 went on camp, to Kaituna.
On the way to Kaituna we stopped off to have lunch and a look around Halswell quarry with the rest of the class.

We learnt about the history of the quarry and how it was mined. At first the workers used sledge hammers and crowbars to remove the stone. It was hard and heavy work. Later machinery was introduced making the mining quicker and easier.
We moved on to Kaituna Camp. Our first activity was water watch. The temperature of the creek had increased by 3 degrees from the morning - but it was still freezing. We pulled on our gumboots and with our buckets and nets we captured some of the creatures in the creek. One of the groups captured one of the biggest toe biters the expert Kelvin had ever seen!
We then excitedly gathered our luggage up and headed off to find out what tent we were in. We all got into our togs and trotted down to the creek for a very cold swim. We all warmed up after getting changed and then enjoyed juicy hamburgers filled with lots of goodies for tea.
The next day it was 29 degrees as we started the long climb up Mount Herbert. Mr Raits group at the front had regular breaks while we caught up, unfortunately for us slower ones as soon as we caught up he would start walking again so we didn't get any breaks at all. Mr Rait played a trick on all of us. Half way up he stopped at a tree and gave us all a leaf to chew as he said it was a Maori good luck tree. After a few chews our mouths were burning - it was a Pepper tree!!! Our mouths burned for a long time and we all had to dodge each other as we spat it out. Mrs Follero was much nicer and gave us some chocolates at the top.
On the last day we did some really fun team building. Our favourite activity was The Iceberg. Lastly we cleaned up the site and headed home to get some sleep.

Gracies Poem for Kaituna
We drove to Kaituna
For lunch I had tuna
We went in the creek
I hoped my gumboots didn't leak
Mt Herbert was a hike
I wished I had a bike
Mr Rait fooled us with the pepper tree
I can't believe he tricked me
When we got to the top the view was the best
We all sat down and had a rest
Kaituna was funny
Every day was sunny
